1. Pope Saint John Paul II
A saint for the modern age, Pope Saint John Paul II contributed so much to the life of the Church and the world in his time here on earth. His writings on the importance and health of the family are particularly relevant in today’s culture, which struggles to define what a marriage, family, or relationship is. He once wrote, “As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live.” Pray to Saint Pope John Paul II for a restoration of a respect for the family life.
2. Saint Joseph – Patron Saint of Marriage and Fathers
Saint Joseph is known as the Patron Saint of marriages due to his relationship with the Blessed Mother and his role as the foster father of Christ. It must have been a unique challenge to live in a household where he was the only family member to struggle with a temptation to sin. However, Saint Joseph took all in stride and quietly led his family to holiness and Heaven. Pray to Saint Joseph to help restore a respect of marriage, especially in light of the popular rise of homosexual unions and the daily struggle of spiritual leadership from fathers.
3. Saint Gianna Beretta Molla – Patron Saint of Mothers and Unborn Children
Saint Gianna Beretta Molla sacrificed her life for the life of her child. In light of the fact that 57 million children have been aborted in the United States alone since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, St. Gianna’s intercession is greatly needed. Pope Francis recently called today’s culture a “Throw-away culture,” and he couldn’t have been more right. With mothers aborting their children at 32 weeks, and even aborting after a live birth, much intercession is needed for a restoration for the respect of life in today’s culture.
4. Saint Maria Goretti – Patron Saint of Purity
In the past week, 68% of men and 18% of women have viewed pornography online. 17,000 human trafficking victims have entered the United States each year. More than 62% of all women of reproductive age are currently using some form of contraceptives (many of whom are using the pill, which is known to be an abortifacient). Human sexuality is under fire and the call to remain pure in today’s culture is bombarded daily with temptations to fall into lust and sin. Saint Maria Goretti, the patron saint of those striving for purity, is a wonderful saint for today’s misguided culture.
5. Saint Phillip Neri – Patron Saint of Joy and Happiness
350 million people currently suffer from depression. Given today’s current news headlines and world events, it is easy to see how one can become depressed about the state of the world today. Saint Phillip Neri, patron saint of those seeking joy, becomes an excellent patron for the modern world. There are many stories of how Saint Phillip would walk around in funny costumes or shave off just half of his beard in order to bring joy into people’s lives. Petition Saint Phillip to help you discover ways that you can bring joy into the lives of others and into your own spiritual life.
6. St. Jude – Patron Saint of Impossible Causes
In just this year alone, France has suffered their seventh terror attack in eighteen months, North Korea confirmed a successful H-Bomb testing and five Dallas police officers were slaughtered. It can sometimes feel like we are living in an impossible situation. We change our profile pictures on Facebook to show support for the latest country ripped apart by terrorism and tragedy, only to change it again a week later after another disaster hits the news stream. You can read more about the Saint Jude novena here – it can be prayed specifically for desperate situations and impossible causes.
