How is your relationship with your guardian angel? If you are like me, it is not as strong as it ought to be. Let us all take some time to reacquaint ourselves with our guardian angels. Here are 9 things your guardian angel wants you to know about him:
1. You Have One
BOOM!
2. Guardian Angels Are Not Recycled
The entire reason your guardian angel was created was for your benefit. This may seem hard to believe, but think about this: They exist and operate outside of time. To think about your angel sitting around from the beginning of creation until you are born is to go about thinking about this in the wrong way. Your angel was created for you and for you alone.
3. Your Guardian Angel Cannot Read Your Mind
Only God is omniscient. Your Guardian Angel is limited in what he knows. Want your angel to know something? Tell him!
4. Your Angel Can Help with Decision Making
God gave you a personal advisor in your guardian angel. If you are struggling with an important decision, ask for your angel’s guidance.
5. Guardian Angels Are for Both Our Physical and Spiritual Protection
Worried that that sketchy dude is going to mug you? Ask for your angel’s protection. Feeling tempted to commit an act you know is wrong? Ask for your angels protection.
6. You Are Not a Burden to Your Angel
He loves you! In fact, the only one who loves you more than your guardian angel is God. Rejecting that kind of love is like rejecting the love of a puppy.
7. It Is Impossible to Ditch Your Guardian Angel
He is always with you. Why fight it? Just accept his aid.
8. You Are Not Allowed to Name Your Guardian Angel
The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments states: “The practice of assigning names to the Holy Angels should be discouraged, except in the cases of Gabriel, Raphael and Michael whose names are contained in Holy Scripture.” To name something is to assume authority/control over them. Angels are not like pets or children. We are not given power over our guardian angels. Could your guardian angel reveal his name to you in prayer? Yes, but a demon could also attempt to trick you by giving you a name for your angel that is not your angel’s name.
9. Guardian Angels Are Biblical
Guardian Angels are mentioned several times in the Bible:
- Psalm 34:7
- Psalm 91:11
- Matthew 18:10
- Hebrews 1:14
- Hebrews 13:2
Don’t forget to spend some quality time with your angel in prayer!
The following prayer to one’s guardian angel was written by St. Eugène de Mazenod for moments of temptation:
My good angel, my body may be here, but my heart is with God. You who are constantly at the foot of God’s throne, offer him my intentions, tell him that I love him above all things. Amen.
