The summertime is especially known for being a time of weddings and it seems that almost everyday over the summer months some couple somewhere is celebrating their wedding anniversary.

Now you could go the traditional route and do a dinner date or flowers and a card — not bad by any means — but you could step it up a notch for your beloved and celebrate your anniversary this year: Catholic Style! Here are 7 suggestions. If you have any you’d like to share, put ’em in the comments section!

1. Go to Mass together

There is nothing more of a cosmic love-fest as the celebration of the Mass. The Son of God gave up his life for his beloved and entering into the mystery of the Mass shows how much God, the creator of the universe and LOVE Itself, truly loves you and gives you an example to follow for your spouse here on earth. Nothing can be more intimate than sharing the Eucharist with your spouse!

2. Spend some time in Adoration together

Again, by spending time with the Author of Love, you and your spouse can draw closer to Him and to each other in the process.

3. Go to Confession together

Nothing is more humbling or more beautiful than admitting you are a sinner in need of God’s love and forgiveness. Not only will the outpouring of graces from this sacrament make you a better person, it will overflow into your relationship with your spouse and draw you closer together.

4. Go on a spiritual retreat with your spouse

Everyone needs some down time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A spiritual retreat and recharge with your spouse allows the both of you to spend the time you need in quietude in order to re-energize yourself and your marriage. Plus, there is nothing like a romantic weekend getaway with your beloved.

5. Pray a novena together

Start your novena with your spouse nine days before your wedding anniversary. Praying together the novena you both chose together for the intentions that the both of you came up with will bear much fruit and will draw you even closer together. Now, there’s even a handy app to help you! No excuses!

6. Make a pilgrimage to a local shrine together

Before you go out to dinner, drinks, and a movie, why not drive to your local holy place and spend some time together there as well? Find a local shrine that you both would like to visit and take a mini-pilgrimage there.

7. Do some corporal or spiritual works of mercy before you go out on your date

As a reminder, the lists of each are below.

Corporal Works of Mercy

  • To feed the hungry;
  • To give drink to the thirsty;
  • To clothe the naked;
  • To shelter the homeless;
  • To visit the sick;
  • To ransom the captive;
  • To bury the dead.

Spiritual Works of Mercy

  • To instruct the ignorant;
  • To counsel the doubtful;
  • To admonish sinners;
  • To bear wrongs patiently;
  • To forgive offences willingly;
  • To comfort the afflicted;
  • To pray for the living and the dead.

Whatever you both decide to do on your anniversary, make sure you include something from the list above. There is nothing like drawing closer to each other as you both draw closer to God! Happy Anniversary!
