The Gospels mention Jesus in synagogues quite a bit. How much information do we have about these ancient Jewish houses of prayer and study? Though St. Adrian of Canterbury, who died in 710 AD and whose feast day is today, was twice offered the bishopric, he declined only to later be made an abbot. Originally from North Africa, he traveled to England and spent his later years teaching and assisting monks and students.
