J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Leaf by Niggle”

This month marks the 80th anniversary of the release of Leaf by Niggle by J.R.R. Tolkien, originally published in the Dublin Review in January 1945. While this story is not as epic or as famous of Tolkien’s others (c’mon, you know what I’m talking about), this little story about this little man echoes in eternity for its beauty and profundity.

1. Here is the story

Right here. Download it. Just take about an hour to just read the story. It honestly may change your life.

2. You’d rather listen? Try this

3. Lessons from Leaf?

Here is a great article from Thomas J. Salerno about the lessons we can learn from “Leaf by Niggle.”

4. More insightful commentary on “Leaf”

Here is a video from the Marion E. Wade Center, which specializes in the works of C.S. Lewis, but also finds connections with other Inkling authors like J.R.R. Tolkien.
