Saturday of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Saturdays have long been a day dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This tradition goes at least as far back as the 700s to Blessed Alcuin of York. It has to do with her steadfast faith after Jesus’s death on the Cross on Good Friday but before his Resurrection on Easter Sunday.
To celebrate Mary this Saturday, enjoy these great quotes about her from the encyclical letter, Mother of the Redeemer, by Pope St. John Paul II.
1. Mary links Jesus and the Church
“There is a unique correspondence between the moment of the Incarnation of the Word and the moment of the birth of the Church. The person who links these two moments is Mary” (paragraph 24).
2. Indissoluble Union
“Mary belongs indissolubly to the mystery of Christ, and she belongs also to the mystery of the Church” (paragraph 27).
3. Present on our Journey
“The Virgin Mother is constantly present on this journey of faith of the People of God towards the light” (paragraph 35).
4. Dignity and True Advancement
“Women, by looking to Mary, find in her the secret of living their femininity with dignity and of achieving their own true advancement.” (paragraph 46)
5. Mirror of Love
“In the light of Mary, the Church sees in the face of women the reflection of a beauty which mirrors the loftiest sentiments of which the human heart is capable: the self-offering totality of love” (paragraph 46).
