3. Scholastica and the Storm

A famous story of St. Scholastica shares about one of her visits with her brother, St. Benedict. As evening came, she begged him to stay so they could extend their time and conversation. Benedict refused citing his own monastic rule which mandated he return to the monastery. So Scholastica turned to God in prayer asking that her brother be able to stay. Suddenly, a storm arose which prevented Benedict from leaving. Shocked, St. Benedict turned to his sister asking what she had done. She replied “Well, I asked you and you would not listen; so I asked my God and he did listen.” Three days later St. Scholastica passed away. The visit had been the siblings’ last on this earth.
