1. Major & Minor Exorcisms?Â
What’s the difference? Here is a short article from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops AND below is a short video from Breaking the Habit that explains it a little. Check it out!
2. Non-Catholic Exorcisms?
Besides Orthodox Christianity, which has a valid priesthood and a long tradition of exorcisms, there is some practice of exorcism and deliverance in Protestant communities. Not a whole lot can be determined with these individuals and they obviously do not consider themselves under the authority of a bishop like a Catholic priest would. Here is an article from Christianity Today introducing some of these figures.
3. Jewish Exorcisms in the Bible?
God provides the earliest example of casting out the devil, an exorcism, in Genesis 3 when he banishes the serpent from the Garden of Eden. There is also an exorcism in the book of Tobit, which is only included in Catholic and Orthodox Old Testaments. There are even Jewish exorcists in the New Testament book of Acts 19, but they use the name of Jesus to cast out demons. Another Jewish scholar during the New Testament time period, Josephus, writes about exorcisms too.Â
4. Non-Christian Exorcisms?
Wherever there is spiritual awareness there is going to be an awareness of demons and the need for exorcism. While there is a tradition of exorcism in other religions, for example here Islam, this does not undermine the necessity for Christ when it comes to conquering the devil. Just as God might allow for miracles to occur outside of the Church, which sometimes happens, so too could He allow for deliverance as well. One of the leading authorities on exorcism in the Islamic tradition is Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips. Below is a video of him explaining it from a Muslim perspective.
5. New Standards for Exorcism?
Yes, there have been some new Rites issues for exorcisms. Here is a link to them on the Vatican website and here is a link to an article from the USCCB explaining them. Below is an episode of Jimmy Akin’s Mysterious World to help you understand them too!
