Everything Shrovetide!
1. Catholic Word of the Day: shrove/shrive
The word itself finds its roots in the Latin, scribere, which means “to write.” The word refers to the Traditional week of “Shrovetide,” and/or the day of “Shrove Tuesday,” which is the week and day before Ash Wednesday (now, more commonly known as Mardi Gras, “Fat Tuesday”). The scribe connection to “shrive” refers to how when one would confess (like, sign a confession) and referred to the practice of going to confession BEFORE Lent begins in order to have a more spiritually fruitful Lent.Â
2. Quinquagesima Sunday
What is Quinquagesima Sunday? What is Quinquagesima? Great questions. This could almost be a second “Catholic word of the day” because it is so unfamiliar to modern ears. The two articles linked above give you all you need to know!
3. Carnival!
While this event is often associated with revelry and, unfortunately, debauchery, it is originally tied to the season of Lent. Check out this article on the “Catholic Roots of Carnival” here. This connection has its own spiritual benefit as we should understand and appreciated the seasons of life that include great feasting and great fasting together.
4. Preparing your heart for Lent
There are so many great resources for Christians to prepare for Lent, which itself is a preparation for the Resurrection of Jesus. Don’t miss out on all that the Church has to offer for your spiritual growth!
5. Why fast?
One of the most ancient and beneficial practices in all of religion, much less Christianity, is that of fasting. Though it has become questionable in a modern, gluttonous and materialistic culture, this, coupled with prayer, is still the most common means of spiritual growth. Check out these great resources on (read) fasting from Catholic Answers.
