Arguing that seven sacraments are necessary for salvation—Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Penance, Extreme Unction, Orders, and Matrimony—the council rejected the teaching of most Protestants that only two were required: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper

One of the lasting legacies to her Saintly generosity is the existence of Xavier University (New Orleans, LA), which stands as the only historically black Catholic University. It’s founding is its own amazing story that deserves some space too.Â

Today’s Gospel reading is the famous story of the rich young man who asked a very important question of Jesus. This story inspired the title of a novel based on the life of St. Anthony of Padua. This 1953 biographical novel by American Catholic novelist John Edward Beahn, follows his life being called from prominent professor and scholar to itinerant preacher and hopeful martyr. Check it out!
