There are three requirements for someone to be a Doctor of the Church. They must be of a high degree of sanctity, eminent learning, and be proclaimed by the Church. As the Catholic Encyclopedia states “certain ecclesiastical writers have received this title on account of the great advantage the whole Church has derived from their doctrine”.
