It’s everyone’s favorite feast…St. Rupert!

1. Who was St. Rupert?

Good question! Here’s a short synopsis of his life from Living the Word:

2. The “Apostle of Bavaria and Austria”

He was a monk, a bishop and missionary who helped bring Christianity to these countries, which would become known as “historically Christian” for over one thousand years!

3. Recognized in both the East and the West

Though his entire life would be spent in the “western world” of Europe, St. Rupert is recognized as a Saint in both the Catholic and Orthodox communions. Here is another cool video about his life too!

4. What connections does Pope Benedict XVI have to St. Rupert?

Pope Benedict XVI was born in a part of Germany that was originally evangelized by St. Rupert. Though one can imagine it would have gotten to that area eventually without him, St. Rupert had a hand in passing along Christianity in an unbroken chain that eventually gave us our great Pope!

5. He could be found on Austrian courier-ancy

St. Rupert’s image was actually put on a stamp in Austria in 1948. You can check it out below:
