The now-classic Christmas (Advent?) song “Mary, Did You Know?” was originally performed by Michael English in 1991, making it twenty-five years old this year. The lyrics were written by Mark Lowry, and the music by Buddy Greene. The song is now a perennial favorite as far as contemporary Christian music goes. However, twenty-five years later, the question remains: from a theological perspective, did Mary “know”? Well, yes and no: although she did not know precisely just *what* Jesus would do detail-by-detail within the context of salvation history in light of the Paschal Mystery, she did know *who* he was in the midst of the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38). For reliable inspiration this Advent season, read through the Infancy Narratives comprising Luke 1-2 and Matthew 1-2. For continued inspiration, check out these twelve amazing renditions of this legendary song that always gets us in the Advent mood as we prepare our hearts for Christmas. (The renditions are in alphabetical order by the last name of the lead performer[s], except for the first three, in order to give homage to Michael English, Buddy Greene, and Mark Lowry.) Saint Mary of Nazareth, pray for us!
