The Ten Commandments and Facebook; an Examination of Conscience

When you think about it, there is a practical application of the Ten Commandments using the Social Network, Facebook.

The Commandment: I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol.

Apart from this commandment forbidding idolatry, it also commands us to put God first in all things. The question to ask ourselves is, “Facebook and God: which comes first?

In other words, do you think about your Facebook friends and games and comment notifications more than you think about God who is sustaing you?

Is Facebook the first thing that comes into your mind when you wake up and the last thing that is in your mind before you go to bed?

Is Facebook that which takes most of your time and without which you seem to be lost? Are you addicted to Facebook?

The Commandment: Do not take the name of the Lord in vain.

This Commandment commands us to use the name of God reverently. The question to ask ourselves is, “Do we joke with the name of God in our Facebook conversations?

In other words, do you make fun of things of God to impress your friends online?

Do you swear with the name of God to cover your lies and half-truths during your Facebook interactions?

The Commandment: Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.

Do you miss Church activities because of Facebook games like Farmville?

Do you miss Mass because you are having an interesting time with a virtual friend on Facebook?

Are you so into Facebook that you forget to even pray?

The Commandment: Honor your father and mother.

Apart from the fact that this commandment commands us to honor and respect our parents, it also reminds us to be respectful to our lawful civil authorities.

Do you insult civil authorities on Facebook just because they seem to be on the wrong path?

Do you disrespect the government in power online to show that you are the one on the right path?

Do you disrespect elderly people on Facebook becasue they happen not to be your parent?

The Commandment: You shall not kill/murder.

Do you promote abortion on Facebook?

Do you provoke others online to the extent of committing suicide?

The Commandment: You shall not commit adultery.

Do you flirt with girls and women on Facebook?

Are you cheating on your husband/wife on Facebook?

Are on Facebook for the purpose of targetting young children for pedophilia?

Do you use Facebook to get a lesbian or gay partner?

The Commandment: You shall not steal.

Are you a cracker/hacker targetting people’s Facebook account?

Are you using Facebook for your 419/scam agenda? Better yet, are you stealing time from your employer by spending lots of time on Facebook?

Are you using Facebook as your radar to monitor people’s checkins and locations in order to go steal them when they are not at home?

The Commandment: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Do you gossip on Facebook?

Are you painting other people black in order to seem cool on Facebook?

Is lying your Facebook currency?

Is slander the only means you can use to disagree with people on Facebook?

The Commandment: You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.

Are you using Facebook as a bait for your friends wife?

Woman are you on Facebook just to snatch other people’s husband?

The Commandment: You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Are you jealous of the new car that has been bought to your friend after reading her Facebook status?

Are you having the desire to own at all cost that luxurious house your friend uploaded its picture on Facebook?
