I have found one of my new favorite books!
Hounds of the Lord by Kevin Vost blew me away. It was exactly what I wanted and I could not put it down having read it within just a few sittings.
Kevin masterfully puts together a book about the “barking” saints, those of the Order of St. Dominic. These Dominicans range from those of the most heroic such as St. Thomas Aquinas to the most obscure such as St. Vincent Ferrer. In the pages, Vost tells the stories of these followers of Christ and how they contributed to Christ’s body as doers and as thinkers, among the many other iconic acts each of them are known for.
Here’s a short list of the diverse saints you’ll meet:
- St. Dominic – founder.
- Fra Angelico – artist.
- St. Catherine – mystic.
- Martin de Porres – servant.
- Pier Giorgio – activist.
This book was much more than a typical saint book for me. As a man in his 3rd year of intention to become a Third Order Dominican, I have a deep desire to unlock the secrets of those I look up to so much: this book did that. Before this book I did not even know about Bl. Bumbert’s teachings within the Order – a subject I am imminently studying with great enthusiasm. But like that, Kevin doesn’t just jot down the facts of these saints and spin them with an interesting twist, he shows the reader exactly what they were thinking and doing and how we can think and do likewise. I really valued that and I think that’s what really sets this book apart
Without saying more, I cannot recommend this book more. I learned a lot, and I know you will, too. Pick this book up immediately.
