It’s that time of year, the new year, when we all want to become better people and set about with plans to do this. Sometimes, resolutions become very hard to keep up with and the burden of trying to become better people becomes too heavy. Resolutions, becoming better people, are crosses and so, like Simon the Cyrene, I’ve compiled a list of saints to help us all in the burdens of our resolutions.

  • Want to lose weight? Pray to the famously rotund St. Thomas Aquinas.
  • Want to get physically fit? Well, you’ve got lots of options! St. Sebastian is the patron of athletes, St. Hyacinth is the patron saint of weight-lifters (and pierogi!), and St. John Paul II and Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati were famously active.
  • Is traveling on your list? Then pray to St. Christopher and again to St. John Paul II.
  • Do you want to get your finances under control, save more, and/or budget better? Then the tax collector St. Matthew and St. Nicholas, who threw bags of money through windows to help the unfortunate, will be your best pals!
  • Do you want to read more? St. Jerome and St. Francis de Sales are good companions.
  • Do you want to further your education or go back to school? St. Joseph Cupertino is the patron of test-takers and St. Thomas Aquinas is an obvious intercessor.
  • Want to spend more time with family? I mean, praying to the Holy Family is like a no-brainer, but also pray to Sts. Anne and Joachim and newly-minted Sts. Louis and Zelie Martin. Talk about intentionality in parenting!
  • Do you desire to make a pilgrimage? Pray to the patron of whichever pilgrimage you’d like to make but you could also pray to St. James the Greater who is the patron of pilgrims.
  • Want to get more organized? Pray to St. Zita, the patroness of housework.
  • Want to get your spiritual life in order and pray more? Well, if you’ve taken up talking to any of these saints, then you’re on your way! Plus, just pick a saint and cultivate a devotion to him/her and ask him to help lead you closer to God. Nothing could be better for your soul…or scarier 😉 Don’t know where to start in picking a saint to be friends with? Check out Jennifer Fulwiler’s Saint Name Generator to give you a kickstart.
