It’s a new world.  Sometimes I like the old one better.  But God is with us, and we can wrap ourselves in the security of our Catholic faith. My latest security blanket has come in the form of  EWTN radio and TV host Teresa Tomeo’s latest book: Walk Softly and Carry a Great Bag: On-the-go Devotions. It’s a sweet, pint-sized book for purses. Each chapter contains a reflection, a sprinkling of Scripture, and inspirational nuggets.

Here’s the sampler version:

God is in the Details.

And you thought it was the devil. But it’s God who wants to be in every detail of our lives. Let him in.

Don’t Just Do Something, Sit There

We’ve been multi-tasked to death, ladies! “Be still and know that I am God” –  Psalm 46:10.

I am Woman, Hear Me Snore

Stop trying to do it all!  God gave us bodies that require sleep. Get some.

Spare the iPod, Don’t Spoil the Child

Research shows that kids who live with a St. Francis philosophy of simplicity as opposed to a Paris Hilton indulgence are much happier.  Who knew? They sure don’t so it’s our job to make them happy.

To Know Him is to Love Him

Why did the Samaritan woman at the well fall so head-over-heels in love with Jesus?  Because he loved her where she was at just like he does with us. Meet him at the well and feel the love.

The Only Thing We Have to Fear Are Those Who Don’t Fear Anything

Don’t be that guy. Or girl. The fearless live without a moral compass– the quickest way to get lost.  And so they have. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” – Proverbs 9:10.

Have Friends in High Places

What’s the point of having connections if you don’t use them?  The “great cloud of witnesses” are ready and waiting to serve you.

They Fought the Lord and the Lord Won

Lay down your arms and put your life in God’s hands. It worked well for St. Paul and St. Augustine.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who’s the Fastest of them All?

There it is–our insecurity that begs the question: “Does this make me look fat?” Tomeo reminds us that we are wonderously made and who are we to argue with the Creator?

Necessity is the Mother of the Microwave

Sometimes our best includes taking short cuts—at least for dinner. Remember, God doesn’t ask for perfection, just faithfulness.

You are What you Tweet

Use social media wisely by asking God to direct us. It helps keep us out of trouble and from wasting so much time. Who me?

Blood, Sweat, and Years

Put some time and effort into a relationship with God. “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; It has been found difficult; and left untried.” – G.K. Chesterton

Fifty Shades of Grace

“Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” – Romans 5:20.

Our over-sexualized culture can find healing in God’s grace. Grace trumps perversion. Every time.

Love Means Having to Say You’re Sorry–And Then Some

“When Pride comes, then comes disgrace; but with the humble is wisdom.”  – Proverbs 11:12.

Put Your Best Faith Forward

And just keep walking right into the arms of Jesus. Best GPS on the planet.
