St. Bernard of Clairvaux is amazing. But that’s not all you need to know. Let’s get to know him!

1. He was a peacemaker

St. Bernard of Clairvaux was known for his eloquence. He, on many occasions, brought peace to the Church throughout its quarrels. One of such occasions was when he worked to help Peter Abelard clear his name of heresy. Abelard and St. Bernard were supposed to debate in front of the Bishops, but due to Bernard’s eloquence, Abelard decided to step down after the opening statement.

2. Clairvaux is part of his moniker because of the abbey he founded

St. Bernard of Clairvaux founded in abbey in a place he called “Clear Valley” or “Clairvaux”. It remains the towns name today.

3. He was is a foremost authority in Mariology

He specifically wrote about Mary the star of the sea. He also wrote much about Mary as Mediatrix of all graces. Again due to his eloquence, his writings on Mary are considered some of the most beautiful.

4. He is known as the Mellifluous Doctor
