Halloween is nearly upon us. On All Hallows Eve, or the day before All Saints Day, we prepare for the celebration of those who have gone before us in the peace and imitation of Christ. The saints are our examples of true love, devotion, and piety for our Lord. It is a day to recognize the heroic virtues of all the saints in heaven, known and unknown. What a great cloud of witnesses we have watching over and praying for those of us still on earth!
Unfortunately, this understanding of the day, as a preparation for All Saints Day, has been mostly lost in the modern iteration of the day.
One way we can evangelize in a fun and non-confrontational way is through carving pumpkins. They are ubiquitous at this time of the year. Instead of carving a ghost or a witch or a scary face into the pumpkin, try carving one of the saints, some Catholic symbol, something pro-life, or a scene from the life of Christ! A bonus is that while you are carving, you could say a rosary or pray with your family while you do it! Win-win!
If you have trouble coming up with an idea, check out these examples below!
Have fun and show a little of your faith at the same time. You never know what effect it could have on those little (or big) trick-or-treaters! It could turn into a great topic of conversation!
Have happy (and safe!) All Hallow’s Eve!
