The 54 Day Rosary novena has become a popular devotion to pray beginning on August 15th and ending on October 7th. But what if I told you that there are some other prayerful ideas to consider for this powerful novena?
I remember the graces praying it last year and my wife and I received news that we were pregnant with our firstborn, Joseph.
The 54 Day Rosary dates back to 1883. a girl named Fortuna Agrelli was suffering from a painful and incurable illness. After 13 months of unsuccessful medical treatments, Fortuna and her family began praying the Rosary on February 16, 1884. On March 3, Mary appeared to Fortuna as Our Lady of Pompeii, seated with the Child Jesus and surrounded by Sts. Dominic and Catherine of Siena.
Our Lady told Fortuna: “Since thou hast called me by the title ‘Queen of the Holy Rosary,’ I can no longer refuse your petition. Make three novenas, and thou shalt obtain all.”
Later, Mary appeared again, saying: “Whoever desires to obtain favors from me should pray three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary and three in thanksgiving.”
Fortuna followed Our Lady’s instructions, praying three novenas in petition and three in thanksgiving. Miraculously, she was healed.
How is the novena divided?
The 54 Day Rosary Novena is divided into two parts, each lasting 27 days.
First 27 Days – Petition:
For the first 27 days, you will focus on petition, asking Our Lady for a specific grace or miracle. During this time, you will pray three novenas—each one lasting 9 days.
Second 27 Days – Thanksgiving:
The second half of the novena (also 27 days) is dedicated to thanksgiving, regardless of whether your request has been granted. Like the first half, this section also consists of three novenas. Each day, you will pray one set of the Rosary mysteries—Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious—in a specific order:
Day 1: Joyful Mysteries
Day 2: Sorrowful Mysteries
Day 3: Glorious Mysteries
This pattern repeats throughout the entire novena. Here is the full guide here.
Testimonies on 54 Day Rosary Novena
Fortuna Agrelli’s story is far from unique. There have been stories of others who found graces in praying this ancient devotion.
One such is that of Jackie Angel. “I was praying for our humility, thinking that this boyfriend would become so humble and on the 27th day he would propose. The 27th day came, and he broke up with me! I was so mad. And for the next 27 days I had to be thankful that he broke up with me!…” Jackie reflected. “A few years later…I started this 54-day novena for my future spouse, having no clue who he was, and I met Bobby on the next day. 54 days later, unbeknownst to me, Bobby bought the engagement ring. And three months later he proposed.”
