7 Ways to Bond with Your Guardian Angel

The feast of the guardian angels is October 2. This often overlooked feast celebrates the angels assigned to each of us for our spiritual and physical protection. They are always with us, and only God (and perhaps Mary) loves you more than your guardian angel. This begs the question: How does one bond with one’s guardian angel? Well, here are seven ways.

1. Prayer

There is no better way to bond with your guardian angel than through prayer. There is the standard guardian angel prayer, but there are other ways to pray for your angel’s intercession in your life. One of my favorite guardian angel prayers comes from St. Eugène de Mazenod:

My good angel, my body may be here, but my heart is with God. You who are constantly at the foot of God’s throne, offer him my intentions, tell him that I love him above all things. Amen.

2. Adoration

Your angel, while always with you, is also at the foot of God’s throne. When you go to adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, you take your angel with you and do something he was created to do—worship God. Your guardian angel loves to worship the Almighty with you.

3. Talk to him

Angels cannot read your mind, so in order to communicate with your angel, you must talk to him. Tell him what is going on inside your head. Ask him to bring your worries, anxieties, joys, etc. to God. He loves you and, like any good friend, wants to know what is going on in your life. Tell him!

4. Learn about your angel

Learning about your angel will naturally increase your devotion to him. The more you know about him, the more drawn to his intercession you will be. Get a book about angels, or read some of the EpicPew articles that have been written about them.

5. Pray the Rosary with him

Mary is queen of the angels. You honor her by praying the Rosary. Invite your guardian angel to pray along with you. In fact, many would say that if you fall asleep while praying the Rosary, your guardian angel finishes it for you.

6. Laugh with him

Dr. Peter Kreeft, in his book on angels, theorizes that angels have senses of humor. If this is true, they probably laugh quite a bit. Any good friend will laugh with you, as will your guardian angel. So, the next time you think of something funny, share it with your guardian angel.

7. Meditate on Scripture with him

Scripture is the Word of God. In it, God reveals Himself to us. When we meditate on scripture, we learn more about God and what He expects of us. Invite your guardian angel into this meditation. He can help you learn more through your mediation. After all, the word “angel” means “messenger.” The message God wants to impart to you can be more clearly revealed with the help of your angel. By receiving information through your angel, you learn more about your angel and how he wants to interact with you. This sharing of information can make you closer.
