On St. Blaise’s feast day, Catholics traditionally receive a blessing of the throat. This typically involves a priest holding two (often comically large) candles, which are crossed and placed near the person’s throat while a prayer invokes St. Blaise’s protection against illness of the throat and all illnesses. Many see this as a way to safeguard their health for the coming year.
