For centuries, Christians have been celebrating the Nativity of Mary, one of only three birthdays marked on the Church’s calendar. Even before the date was set for the celebration, people were honoring Mary and her special role in Salvation History through art, prayers and song.

For Mary’s Birthday this year here is a collection of songs honoring Our Lady from ancient hymns to modern originals. You may just find your new favorite way to sing to the Mother of God for her birthday.

Sub Tuum Praesidium

Largely regarded as the oldest recorded prayer to Mary, this hymn calls upon Mary’s protection. This version, sung by men’s ensemble Floriani is captivating.

 

Ave Maria

This acapella Ave Maria sung by Catholic artist Sarah Kroger is gorgeously peaceful.

 

Gratia Plena by Br. Isaiah

Br. Isaiah is a Franciscan friar who makes Christian music in an acoustic style. This mix of Marian prayers is both unassuming and heartfelt.

 

Salve Regina

This classic Marian Chant is a new arrangement they describe as “a mystical union of East and West” and may just be a new favorite.

 

Be Born in Me by Francesca Battistelli

Christian artist Francesca Battistelli articulates our Mother’s self-surrender and humility beautifully in this reflective song.

 

No Tomb for the Ark

While this song is for Mary’s Assumption not her Nativity it does speak to her special role as the Mother of God. Plus, it’s kind of a bop.

 

Magnificat in Song

It’s hard to top Mary’s own prayer of praise, set to song. This John Michael Talbot version titled “Holy is His Name” brings all the nostalgia for Mass in the early 2000’s.

 

Magnificat, but Latin

It’s hard to pick just one version of the Magnificat. This Latin one sung by Benedictine nuns is heavenly.

 

Chinese Song to the Virgin Mary

If, like me, you don’t speak Chinese fear not. This lovely song doesn’t really need them but subtitles are included in English and Spanish.

 

Ave Maris Stella

Artist Nathan Singer puts to song an English version of the ancient hymn to Mary, Star of the Sea.

 

On This Day, O Beautiful Mother

Mary’s birthday is a wonderful day to remember her materncal care and entrust ourselves to her. There’s also something so elegant and sublime about a choir of nuns singing to Our Lady.
